Desire plus discipline unleashes destiny

“Desire without discipline is empty longing”

  “Desire plus Discipline unleashes Destiny”

I had the opportunity to test this statement/principle on New Year’s Day 2013.

My friend Steve invited me to ski The Greenway – a popular “back country” trek within the Prince George city limits- from The University of Northern British Columbia [UNBC] to the Otway Ski Centre a distance of around 18 – 21 km.

I enjoy cross-country skiing.  It is not a sport from my youth having grown up in warmer climes.  I have come to this sport later in life.  As much as I enjoy cross-country skiing, I had never skied anything close to the distance we were contemplating.  Jan 1, 2013 was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures ranging between –5 C and –10 C – Close to perfect conditions; a good day to be outside.

“Desire might get you to the trail-head but it will take discipline to get you to your destination.” the end of the trail. On this day discipline involved one ski stride/glide after another across the undulating/rolling terrain: up the front side, down the backside and along the base of the drumlins that make up the topography.  I begin to realize the truth of the saying that “every journey is really made up of a series of small steps” or in this case a series of small ski strides.

I am keeping track of the kilometer markers as we stride along.  We are within city limits but it feels like we are in the middle of nowhere.  I cruise along flat sections of the trail – discipline.  I grunt up steep sections of the trail – discipline.  I wipeout [4 times] going down steep sections of the trail.  I get up and continue going – discipline.  We climb the steepest hill, get to the top and we are halfway there!  The sun’s rays seem to be at their most brilliant at this time.  We rest, fuel up and then move on – discipline.

“Desire is like a flame and discipline is the fuel that keeps the flame burning.”

The sun is declining in the sky; shadows are lengthening as we move closer to our destination.  Everyone is getting tired but we soldier on.  Finally we emerge from the forest on to the trails at Otway. It is just after 4 pm. We have being skiing for just about 4 hours. We arrive at the Otway parking lot exhausted but exhilarated. Trail end.

In retrospect, I realize that the end of that trail was not the final destination but only the end of that part of the journey“Desire plus discipline unleashes Destiny.” Other challenges lie ahead.

What are your desires, goals, plans, etc, for 2013?

Remember, without discipline we are just daydreaming.

Let this be a year of application. Exercise the discipline to see those plans and dreams become reality. Cliff  {AMDG}
