This post has its origin in an exchange with a colleague of mine sometime last week. I was walking ahead of her but could see her reflection in the glass doors in front of me. With my back turned to her I greeted her. How did you know it was me when you are walking away from me was her response? I could see your reflection in the glass was my reply. This exchange set off a train of thought triggered by one of my students.
We are currently examining the pillars and foundation necessary for building a “House of Destiny” – mastering self-leadership in order to leave a legacy of positive influence. We have a choice of two foundations: character [inner principles and values], or personality [external influences].
The reflection in the glass door reminded me of this statement from Proverbs one of the wisdom books of the Old Testament: “Just as you can see your own face reflected in water, so your heart reflects the kind of person you are”. Self-evident – my reflection looks like me. In the same way that my reflection looks like me, my life is a reflection of what is in my heart. The heart refers to the core of our being: our intentions, values and motivations. Our heart represents that inner foundation on which we are to build our “House of Destiny”.
Who we are on the inside will inevitably be revealed in our lives. We can run but we can’t hide – adversity or success will be our revealers. The essence of life it seems is an “inside job”. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, instructs us to: “Guard/watch over/nurture our heart with all diligence because everything depends on it”.
