I recently watched the latest X-men movie: “Days of Future Past”,which I mainly enjoyed. It set me to thinking about the underlying premise – that we could return to the past, do a “mulligan ” on our choices or the choices of others, to change the future which happens to be our present.
Of course this type of time travel and intervention is entirely possible in the Sci-Fi genre and could be of wonderful benefit if indeed we could do it “in real life”. We all probably have at least one thing in our past for which we wish that we had the chance to do a”mulligan”. We can’t. We cannot undo the choice once it has been made and a series of events have been set in motion. Consequences have to be accepted.
Our past does influence us. However, we should not spent our time regretting a past that we cannot change. Instead, let us endeavour to live mindful of how we choose and what we choose, knowing that our choices in the present will influence our future.
I am reminded of the Prayer of Serenity: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time…”
