This past weekend I did my leadership class retreat. It was intense, rewarding and also tiring. There were good times of discussion and team challenges. During one of the discussion times we were exploring values. One student mentioned that one of her top five values was “self- love”. Further discussion revealed that “self-love” translated into having a good sense of “self-worth.” Our discussion reminded me of an article that I had read recently entitled: ” self-trust-lead-thyself.” Before you can truly lead others you have to be able to lead yourself. Having a sound sense of your self-worth is a key building block in trusting, and leading yourself. I once heard it said that the worth or value of a work of art depends upon: the artist/creator, the uniqueness of the piece, and on what someone is willing to pay for it.
Self-worth is not derived from the regard of others as important as that can be.The ultimate source of self-worth is knowing and accepting that we as humans are created in the image of God, and that he always acts in unconditional love toward us. Written over each of our lives as individuals are the words: “worth dying for”. He has set infinite value on us by giving his life on our behalf. Lead knowing you are fully loved.
