Simply Lead

Last Friday, May 10 2013, I was part of the team hosting the simulcast of the 2013 Chic-fil-a  Leadercast at the Coast Inn of the North, Prince George, BC.  This was our third year hosting this event.  The  quality of  the presentations was by far the best I have heard in our three years of hosting.  There were some technical glitches [inevitable?!] but this did not detract too much from the overall quality of the event.

I thought I would share with you some of the things that stood out for me[ my takeaways or points to ponder].  A thread that ran through all the presentations was the importance of relationships:

– Healthy relationships provide the context in which positive growth can occur in all arenas of our lives.

From the former Secretary of State [USA], Condoleezza Rice, there were two takeaways for me:

– Be grounded. Know your core values and stand on them.

– Take time to take care.  You need to take time for personal renewal so that you have resources to give to others.

Stephen Covey refers to this as “sharpening the saw”.

John Maxwell [world renown leadership author and communicator], views leadership as being all about influence.  Maxwell’s leadership math provided more points to ponder:

– Add value to your people everyday via encouragement, affirmation or opportunities to function in their areas of strength. This will increase your influence.

Subtract your leadership landmines, those choices and ways of being that tend to derail your leadership.

Multiply your strengths by developing them. [We need to identify what those strengths are].

Divide your weaknesses by delegating them.  Enable others to act. Gather around you people who can complement you in the areas of your weaknesses. Take advantage of the “complementarity of differences”.

Our final speaker for the day was Lieutenant Commander[LCDR] Rorke Denver, Navy Seal, who starred in the hit film “Act of Valor”.

My takeaway from LCDR Denver’s presentation was the statement:

“Calm is contagious” [So is panic]. As a leader everything  you do is potentially contagious. Walk  in integrity.  Be authentic. Model the way.
